SEM Annual 2017 Conference and Exposition on Experimental and Applied Mechanics

Challenges in Experimental Mechanics

June 12-15, 2017

On behalf of the SEM Executive Board, the Executive Director and staff, I welcome you to the 2017 SEM Annual Conference and Exposition on Experimental and Applied Mechanics. The theme for this year's conference is Challenges in Experimental Mechanics. This conference cannot be done without the support of our staff and the Technical Divisions that organized this year's technical tracks, symposia and sessions. Our special thanks goes to all of them for their continued dedication and support. With 445 abstracts accepted for presentation, the technical program promises to provide a very well rounded program.
Highlights of the technical program include:
  • The Springer/Nature Young Investigator Lecture entitled “Living on the Edge – Emerging Interface Problems in Soft Matter, Cell and Neuro Mechanics” will be presented by Christian Franck on Monday morning at 11:30
  • The prestigious William M. Murray lecture entitled “Mechanics of Adhesion – Is there still room at the bottom?” will be presented by Kenneth Liechti on Tuesday morning at 11:10
  • Two preconference courses will be offered on Sunday before the start of the conference
  • The Annual Student Paper Competition sponsored by Correlated Solutions will include entries from 16 students on Monday. Awards for the top presentations will be given at the Awards Luncheon on Wednesday
As done for the past several years, the Technical Divisions (TDs) will meet on Tuesday at 12:10 pm and a pizza lunch will be served. This is to entice all to get involved and participate in the conference. The TDs are the folks that actually develop the program so input from everyone is always welcome; this is how we make the program continue to be focused on the issues that concern our members. Join in and let us know your ideas and thoughts. This also provides an excellent forum to meet colleagues with similar focus as well as get more involved in “your” society. The Exhibit Hall opens on Monday at 2:30 pm – stop by and visit to check out the latest equipment and technical resources for experimental mechanics.

Please be sure to join me at the Welcome Reception on Sunday night as well as the President's Reception on Tuesday night. This is a time for all of us to connect with friends and colleagues and celebrate the success of SEM for close to three-quarters of a century promoting excellence in experimental mechanics.

I also want to say that it has been an honor and privilege for me to serve as your President of SEM for this past year. I am indebted to the SEM staff, the Executive Board, and Executive Director Kristin Zimmerman for their support and guidance throughout the year.

Peter Avitable,
SEM President
