The Volatiles, Regolith, and Thermal Investigations Consortium for Exploration and Science (VORTICES http://vortices.jhuapl.edu/index.php
) team is a member of the Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI: http://sservi.nasa.gov/
). The research done by VORTICES focuses on the life cycle of airless body surfaces, from creation of regolith to the thermal properties and temperature distribution of lunar and asteroidal surfaces and the incorporation and transport of volatiles, as well as outreach in education and communication. Over 25 Co-Is at 11 different institutions in 10 different states contribute to VORTICES and SSERVI research goals in advancing interdisciplinary scientific studies and helping pave the way for human exploration of deep space targets.
