Jim has been with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids since 2011. He is the NWS liaison to the Michigan State Police - Emergency Management (EM) and Homeland Security Division, partnering and briefing incident management teams before/during disasters, events and exercises. Disasters and exercises Jim has represented the NWS is since 2015 include: the Flint Water Crisis, 2017 Mid-Michigan Flooding Disaster, Nuclear Power Plant Disaster Exercises for DC Cook, Palisades and Fermi 2 Nuclear Power Plants and the 2017 Michigan Statewide Power Outage Exercise. Jim also serves as NWS Grand Rapids Local EM and Media coordinator for 23 Counties in Michigan, working on increasing public safety and preparedness with a special focus on plain language communication of complex information. He will be completing his Professional Emergency Manager Certification in Michigan in 2018.
