Michael Owens, DO, MPH, CEM

Dr. Owens is an Emergency Physician at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Director of the US Navy’s Global Health and Disaster Response Fellowship, and an Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University. Dr. Owens received his medical degree from the Ohio University, Masters in Public Health from the University of Massachusetts, and Emergency Medicine residency as Chief Resident at Michigan State University. In the Navy he served as a Flight Surgeon and assisted with the DOD Medical Space Shuttle Support program. Past positions include serving as the Region III Deputy Medical Officer, Medical Officer for the Virginia Disaster Medical Assistance Team, and is the current Medical Director for the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Medical Response Team. Dr Owens’ most recent duties include directing multiple disaster workshops throughout Latin America, the Pacific, and the continent of Africa. He supported the 2014 Ebola epidemic as Medical Coordinator for an Ebola Treatment Unit in Liberia and served on the Laboratory Cluster committee. Finally, his work includes multiple publications in the Emergency and International Emergency Medicine literature.
