I will describe recent surveys of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) and in particular SPLASH (the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl). In SPLASH, we have performed a high sensitivity survey of OH emission and absorption. In the CMZ, we see widespread absorption, projected against the strong, diffuse continuum background. Together with information from CO surveys, as well as dense gas tracers, we can build up a 3-dimensional model of the gas concentrations in the CMZ and use this model to inform theories that attempt to explain the unusual star formation in the CMZ.
