Recent observations and modeling have improved our undestanding of the formation of globular clusters in galaxies throughout cosmic time. Large samples of clusters can be used to trace the assembly of massive galaxies via accretion of satellite galaxies and their globular cluster systems. I will discuss current theoretical efforts to reconstruct the merger histories of massive ellipticals and reveal the origin of their globular clusters.
