Since its foundation on March 21, 1965, the Korean Astronomy Society (KAS) has grown enormously from a small organization with its 20 members at the time of foundation to an important science organization with currently 753 members.
By hosting two semiannual meetings in spring and autumn, KAS provides Korean and international astronomers with an important stage for scientific communication.
For global scientific communication, KAS joined International Astronomy Union (IAU) in 1973 and successfully hosted the IAU Regional Meeting of Asia and Pacific in 1996.
In April of 2005, KAS celebrated its 40th birthday and published a memoire describing the progress since its foundation. In 2009, KAS cohosted a meeting to commemorate the International Year of Astronomy 2009 in joint with the Korean Space Science Society (KSSS).
In 2012, KAS and KSSS had a special meeting to commemorate their successful hosting of the XVII International Astronomy Olympiad.
