Professor Raimar Scherer has more than thirty years of experience in construction IT, including seven years as full professor for CAD/CAM at the University of Karlsruhe and several years of practice in the construction industry and in IT consultancy. Since 1994 he is Head of the Institute of Construction Informatics at the TU Dresden, Germany. His research activities comprise a broad spectrum of construction IT aspects including product and process modelling, knowledge-based systems, information logistics, multi-model data management, virtual labs, simulation systems, grid/cloud computing and mobile computing. Professor Scherer is one of the oldest BIM data model developers in charge in Europe. He was member and later on vice chairperson of the product model group in ISO 10303, the forerunner of IFC (ISO 16739). In 1994 he founded the first European BIM conference, ECPPM, which grew to a sustained biannual event. Currently, he is chairman of the European Association on Product and Process Modeling in the Building Industry, chairman of the German DIN group for Technical Product Documentation in construction, and member of ISO TC184/SC4, the German buildingSMART, the International Joint Committee of Structural Safety and the D-GRID advisory board. Prof. Scherer has more than 200 scientific publications.
