Abstract

We want to discuss topics that range from the technological utopian visions conceptualized by the flag bearers of Blockchain/Unicorn-land to the technological dystopian hypotheticals of unstoppable dark markets.

  • Utopia: What are we not seeing currently? How can we make more ethical decisions now for more sustainable/ethical future trajectories of this technology
i.e. Blockchain citizens (Pangea Jurisdiction, Free Society), Cashless Society
  • Dystopia: How can things go wrong? How can Orwellian governments or selfish actors pirate the blockchain? i.e. Assassination market ÐApps, decentralized troll factories, Blockchain viruses, Fomo3d?

This is an experimental session that will involve an award-winning imagination game called "The thing from the Future" that challenges players to collaboratively and competitively describe objects from a range of alternative futures. In our case we will specifically focus on blockchain as the main object.

Participants in this breakout room have the option to complete a questionnaire that evaluates the perceptions and attitudes of blockchain community (DevCon goers) for the purpose of better understanding the social implications and visions of blockchain's future potential. The findings of this research will be publicly available.
